There are two types of people. Those that want their slow cooker pulled pork cooked in BBQ sauce and those that want to add BBQ sauce after the pulled pork is cooked. Both ways can be cooked in the slow cooker with delicious results.
Both ways are started the same. First, cut off any excess fat from the pork roast. It is best to put your favorite rub on the pork and place it in a plastic bag to marinate either overnight or for 24 hours. After that, you can place the pork in the slow cooker and cook it as directed.
Or another way would be to place the pork in a separate pan to brown it before placing it in the slow cooker. To brown the pork roast dredge the seasoned and marinated pork in flour and place in a hot pan with olive oil and cook on all sides for a total of about 10 minutes until a caramelized crust is achieved.
Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork
Needed: One boneless shoulder or butt pork roast about 21/2 to 3 lbs. The size of your slow cooker will help you decide on the size of the roast you cook. Read the instructions that came with your cooker to figure out which is the best size for your slow cooker. A 4-quart cooker will best handle a smaller roast.
Place a pork shoulder roast in the slow cooker. Cook covered on low for 10 to 12 Hours. The pork roast can also be cooked on high for 5 to 6 hours.
Remove the roast from the cooker and discard any liquids in the pot. Shred the pork with 2 forks. You can serve the shredded pork with a variety of sauces or you can mix the pork in the sauce by following these directions:
Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork with BBQ Sauce
Mix together the following ingredients:
- One 14 oz. bottle barbecue sauce
- 1 onion
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar
- Put sauce into the slow cooker and then add the shredded pork.
- Cook on high for 1 hour or low for 2 hours.
This will make enough for 8 sandwiches.
This recipe is for a small slow cooker. If you have a larger slow cooker (7 quarts), double the recipe except for the barbecue sauce. Use only a 21-ounce bottle.
Some people like shredded barbecued pulled pork as a meal. They like to cook the barbecued meat as if they were making it for sandwiches, but instead, they serve it over rice. The main difference would be that a bell pepper could be added to the ingredients while cooking and you could cook the meat in the barbecue mixture from the beginning.
Important tip: don’t add any water to the sauce mixture. The moisture from the meat will accumulate in the slow cooker. Keep the lid on during the cooking process. There is no need to “check” to see if the meat is cooking. Lifting the lid reduces the heat and requires more cooking time.
