Ground Beef Recipes – Cottage Pie

This recipe is inspired with the shepherd’s pie, however ,instead of using lamb meat, we use beef.  This is one of the best recipes among all the ground beef recipes for aside form it easy to cook, you can include leftover vegetables like carrots and celery.


  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 Onions (chopped)
  • 2 Carrots (diced)
  • 1 stick of Celery (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Parsley (chopped)
  • 675 ground beef
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pinch black pepper

For the topping:

  • 900g Potatoes (cooked with skins)
  • 60g Butter
  • 150ml Milk
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg (grated)


In a large frying pan, brown half of the ground beef. Add the vegetables and fry gently. When cooked place into the plate and set aside.

Again, raise the heat onto the pan and add the other half of the beef. Leave to fry until browned properly. Turn it over and repeat the browning process. Drain fats and return the beef and vegetable mixture to the pan. Sprinkle the flour and stir for 30 seconds. Add the herbs, water, Worcestershire sauce and tomato ketchup. Season with salt and black pepper.  Simmer for 45 minutes until beef become tender and thickened. Add little water when drying out.  When already cook, put in a plate and leave to cool.

Bake potatoes until tender in the oven under 220C / gas 7.  Turn the heat down to 190C/gas 5.  Remove the skin of the potatoes and mash with 45g butter and hot milk enough to make it soft but still hold its shape.

Spoon the mashed potato over the beef and  then spread down lightly in an even layer.  Dot the top layer with remaining butter. Bake for 30 minutes until top is browned.
