Many people who want to lose weight are confused by the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets which proponents claim that carbohydrates (most fruits, grapes including, are carbohydrate-rich) are responsible for making people fat. 5. Calcium absorption – carbohydrates can enhance calcium absorption. Calcium is essential for strong and healthy bones. Moreover, calcium can help you maintain the healthy weight, protect your heart and lower your risk of colon cancer.
Carbohydrates can make you fat only if you eat them in excess – just like eating too much dietary fat can make you fat. To simplify how your body works, you gain weight when you eat more calories than you burn and you lose weight when you eat fewer calories than you burn.
One cup of grapes (70 calories) provides only 2-3% of your daily calorie requirements and approximately 18 grams of carbohydrates. That’s really nothing to worry about.
Even fans of low-carb diets say that in most cases you shouldn’t eat less than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day, so if you want to follow a low-carb diet, you can still enjoy a cup of grapes a day.
Grapes Can Help You Lose Weight!
Eating grapes aren’t detrimental to your diet. Quite contrary – consuming grapes can even help you lose weight! Resveratrol which is found in grapes was found to stimulate a fat-regulating hormone called adiponectin.
People who are obese have lower levels of this hormone. As a result, they have problems with controlling blood sugar levels and appetite.
Studies show that higher levels of adiponectin can help people maintain the healthy weight more easily. Moreover, higher levels of adiponectin are linked to lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
As you can see, the question shouldn’t be “are grapes fattening?” but “how do grapes help you lose weight?”.
